The Yaris is just a plain reliable car. If you need to go from point A to B, the Yaris is fine. However, it's very slow and boring. The Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Scion iA, even a Hyundai Accent would be more appealing to me than the Yaris. In some ways Toyota were 5 years too late with the GR. however it is a bit of a peak for hot hatches and a hell of a high to go out on. I think there will be more as Toyota have a lot invested in the technology in the GR Yaris. They are very proud (quite rightly) of the ‘GR four’ 4 wheel drive system. They use it in the GR Yaris and Corolla.
The trope of "yaris is bulletproof" is a fair one. The 1.0l and 1.3l vvti's they produce seriously are well built. I've seen several mk1 yaris's at over 150k miles, and even saw a redditor on r/cartalk show his 1.0l mk1 yaris at over 300k miles! The automatics are dreadfully slow to pickup, but the manuals aren't too bad.
I've absorbed, more or less, that a car-as-appliance buyer such as myself should basically get a Honda or a Toyota, with Corolla / Yaris / Civic / Fit as top-tier contenders for their longevity and reliability. Thanks to its host of reliability issues, the 2009 Matrix is one of the worst Toyota Matrix years to avoid. Once again, the Matrix earned another “Beware of the Clunker” award from Car Complaints with its 2009 iteration - it also happens to be the worst model year, according to the website. The 2009 Matrix’s primary issue is engine failure.

The Yaris iA is a rebadged Mazda 2. $11k for a 2018 Yaris IA at 45k miles is what I'm showing in my area as well. Toyota kept Mazda's interior design for the iA and just restyled the front exterior it looks like. This is a good thing - the interior is thoughtfully laid out.
